Microcrystalline testing involves combining a given amount of isolated sample with a specifically known chemical reagent. In the presence of a drug or poison, a chemical reaction will occur producing a precipitate. The precipitate structure and color varies in respect to the drug or poison that is tested. The precipitate that is formed can then be screened or viewed under a microscope for identity confirmation (Bell, 2009). This test is more accurate than color testing due to the more analysis that is done on the precipitate that is obtained. The test however does not indicate the quantity of drug or poison that is present in the sample. The test also is done to specific substances in the body such as cocaine and methamphetamines. The confirmation test is always necessary due to the test on specific substances.Immunoassay test is the technique that identifies and measures the level of a drug or poison from a sample taken from an individual. The technique uses the principle of chemical reaction of antibodies to their specific antigens. The test is common due to the ability to test and determine the level of concentration of the drug or detected poison in the isolated sample (Flanagan, Perrett and Whelpton, 2005). Antibodies that are used in the test are obtained from animals through combination of the drug or poison with a protein which results to the production of complex of drug and protein. The substance is then injected in the animal where it is apparent in the immune system of the animal as an antigen (Bell, 2009). The immune system of the animal injected will produce specific antibodies which will act against the complex. The antibodies are then extracted from the blood of the animal for use in the test. Immunoassay testing is always followed by a confirmation test due to production of a false positive result which is caused by organic compounds with similar chemical structure to drugs and poisons.Gas chromatography is a technique used in identification of drugs and poisons through the separation of an isolated drug or poison to characteristic component chemical portions. The technique is common due to the accuracy and it being fast. In carrying out the test, the sample that is isolated is placed in a chamber with high temperatures and nitrogen gas passed through it. Isolated sample is then made to pass through the tubing with the components completely separating
