US Foreign Policy & Democracy: Impact on the Muslim Nations

United States House Community on Foreign Affairs has specified certain areas where the foreign policies of the United States have vested interests. Some of them are export control, nuclear non-proliferation program, curb the development of nuclear hardware, encourage international commerce, safeguard its international business abroad, foreign collaboration in international education and the protection of the interests of the American citizen abroad. The state’s foreign policies have become a pondering issue over the years in the world community. The rise of the United States as a capitalist power in the global economy and its military relationship and troop deployment have fuelled question regarding its implicit ideologies. Its war in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan clearly brings out the lip service given as an avowal of its drive to promote democracy and international peace. The reason for the war in Iraq, as stated by the George Bush administration, was to promote democracy in Iraq, to create a free Iraq that would be able to sustain itself, govern itself and defend itself. This war was seen as a means to install stability in the troubled regions and to bring the prosperity in the poor countries. For the Bush administration, promoting democracy was a way to fight against terrorism. But to begin with, the lack of an obvious and comprehensive explanation of democracy can be taken to be the reason of the failure in promoting democracy in the US-allied countries. But it has been observed in the recent years that the US foreign policy is, in reality, involves a number of objectives, which are tuned to a certain interest of the nation. It is said that the present scenario of the America is not concerned with whether democracy is worthwhile but it is more concerned with when and how to apply this ideology to enfranchize the national interest of the policymaker. In 2005, Condoleezza Rice, the then Secretary of State formulated three objectives of the nation’s diplomacy.
