The company operates an extensively large fleet of trucks for its distribution functions coupled with an extremely efficient supply chain that utilizes various technologies such as the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, a global satellite system referred to as the Retail Link and the Universal Product Code bars among others.A typical information flow entails the transfer of information from a customer to the manufacturer through intermediaries such as the retailer and the distributors. At Walmart, the information flow and sharing has a well-developed system that utilizes systems such as a point-of-sale barcode readers, and a vendor managed inventory (VMI) among others. The vendor managed inventory (VMI) allows the suppliers of the chain store to easily access information on the buying patterns and consumer transactions. This allows the suppliers to take the responsibility for their products sales as well as marketing based on how the products are moving in the Walmart stores. The use of a universally accepted barcode system by the suppliers helps facilitate large scale operation. The system involves transferring the automatically scanned pallets codes to a centralized computer system. The information shared between the suppliers, and Walmart include the type of product, its quantity, the distribution information and the store where the product is required. With this processes occurring simultaneously between the entities involved, it ensures a smooth logistic process that saves time and labour. This has been very efficient since the adoption of this kind of partnership with its suppliers, leading to a reduction of its managerial and other resources’ demands.
