Reasons Affecting Nurses Working In Washington DC. The number of days in a week in which nurses do a long shift, the consecutive number of days without a week off and the work pressure during the shifts affect the efficiency and safety of a nurse’s work. The designed shifts for the nurses are 8 hours, 12 hours and on some occasions 16 hours in duration. The shift timings are 7o’clock in the morning to 7 o’clock in the evening, then the night shift from 7pm to 7am. Some are 24 hours in duration. Sometimes nurses do overtime when it is not a mandate. This is due to the condition of the patients and the increase in the workload of their colleagues. Another reason is that they have to maintain a performance metric. If it is not up to the mark then they may not get paid leaves.

Hence to make up for this inability to keep the stack green they have to work overtime or sometimes have to work during their day offs (Janice 8-9).A study was conducted in 2004 which included 393 nurses. 30% of them made an error and another 33% were close to making an error during the 28 days for which data was collected. These were mostly educational errors, while some were made during documentation. Another series of studies showed that nurses with rotational shifts and night shifts were more inclined to feel sleepy at work which affected their quality of work and also experienced accidents while driving than those nurses who were regularly doing day shifts. Again, when the work hours were extended nurses find it difficult to stay awake. Around 66% of the nurses working in the critical care department in DC found it difficult to stay awake when their duty hours were extended (Janice 10).The extended schedules result in different types of stresses on the nurses. One such stress is the absence of regular breaks resulting in not being able to have meals at the correct times. This results in nurses using more and more sick leaves. Another problem is the physical injury when on duty. Parts of the body such as back, neck, shoulder and elbow strains are very common. Needlestick injuries and chemical spills are also grave problems. Nurses are at a risk of communicable diseases like Hepatitis B and C and HIV due to needlestick injury (Janice 11).To conclude, the work environment for the nurses is becoming more and more challenging day by day. It is becoming stressful and it is adversely affecting the health of the nurses, which is affecting their work. Reasons Affecting Nurses Working In Washington DC.
