Addressing the high failure rates will enable the country to enhance its competitiveness.Furthermore, qualitative research is flexible. Instead of applying a rigidly defined framework, research method and data collection style, a flexible approach is important in developing a holistic understanding of an issue. The method involves the collection of data using observational methodologies. The methods include the use of focus groups, surveys or through direct observation. However, it is important to note that most qualitative research methods are expensive to implement. In addition, it incorporates an important human element that is important in understanding students. The basic research problem is the poor performance levels in intermediate algebra. Understanding the problem move will result in the reduction of the failure rate through the implementation of new teaching strategies. The high failure rates in intermediate algebra should worry all stakeholders in the education process. Algebra is an important part of mathematics. As a result, most undergraduate level courses include advanced algebra classes. If the students do not develop a solid foundation in the subject at this level, then it would undermine their future financial performance. The design is important because it allows the researcher to sit in class. The practice will help the researcher to determine if the source of the problem is the teaching methodology. Some teaching practices may undermine rather than enhance the learning process. Consequently, it is important to ensure that teachers are conducting algebra lessons in a manner that encourages the students to embrace the subject. In addition, it would reveal the attitude of the students towards the unit. If the students have a positive attitude, they will be willing to learn about the concepts.
