The gender binary attempts to enforce individuals to conform to femininity and masculinity ideals in all sex and gender aspects such as biological sex, gender expression, and gender identity. People in western societies are often allowed to associate themselves with any gender category regardless of whether they are biologically males or females.
Mostly, people embrace their gender identity between the ages of three and six. It is usually affected or influenced by a person’s private interests, social interactions, and other people’s influences. Biological research suggests that gender identity development is as a result of hormonal or genetic influence rather than it being as a result of socialization. According to the biochemical theory of gender development, people acquire their gender identities via hormonal and genetic factors. Although biological research dismisses the effect of social factors on gender identity, other studies have found a robust correlation to environmental and social factors. For example, the culture into which an individual has raised in influences his/her gender identity.
