Science fiction and suspense films that used this electronic instrument stood out as opposed to those that were non-Theremin-flavored. Most films scored the second level of musical signifier but the science fiction films which used Theremin from the 1950s created the third level of musical signifier.One of the major films that has used Theremin is “The Day The Earth Stood Still” which uses Theremin as a background musical instrument for the film. The film is a suspense and science fiction type about a humanoid alien visiting earth to deliver a message to humanity in the company of a robot. The use of Theremin at the beginning of the film is so overt that it stands out as a theme. The sound produced by Theremin brings out tension to the audience as it builds a somewhat mysterious unknown feeling. The music is instrumental is bringing the audience close to the film.Klaatu, the alien lands at around 8:00 from the UFO and Theremin is applying at a very high range. This evokes panic to the audience since people don’t know what to expect from the creature. The feeling is that the creature is very powerful. At 10:24 in the film, the sound of Theremin sounds lower as evokes feelings of nervousness to the audience. Theremin appears in the film to create a scary atmosphere to the audience. It fails to appear and only brass plays a noble melody at 31:00 when Klaatu sees Lincoln’s statue with a boy. Theremin appears again at the background and becomes intense, heavy and mysterious at 53:10 as the two aliens are having a conversation. When the two keepers are attacked by the creatures, Theremin plays at loud value to successfully deliver a scary mood. The same heavy and mysterious sound is felt at the background at 56:40 when Klaatu comes to the UFO. At 61:48, Theremin starts again in high pitch when electricity is stopped. This sets out a fearful mood to the audience as they have lost all their power yet they have to face an unknown and powerful creature. Theremin is also felt at 67:45,77:19,78:30,80:50,86:30.
