Logistics and operation managment

Scheduling can be defined as the process of controlling, arranging and optimizing the workload in the manufacturing or production process. It is used for allocating the machinery and plant resources, planning production processes, planning human resources and purchasing materials. It is a significant process for engineering and manufacturing, where it may impose a significant impact on the production of the organization. In manufacturing process, the major purpose of scheduling is to minimize the time and cost of production by making the production facility aware of the equipment that should be used for manufacturing. The production schedule also reduces the costs and maximizes the efficiency of supply chain operations. Imbalance in the scheduling process may result in overproduction. It occurs when the organization allows every production operation to work as fast as it can, without concerning the balance between the working of other production operations. Scheduling helps the firm in maintaining the balance between operations, by telling an organization when to begin a particular operation. The imbalance between inventory management, capacity planning and scheduling may result in under or over stocking of items. Under-stocking of items may result in lost sales, missed deliveries, production bottlenecks, dissatisfied customers and it also unnecessarily ties up the funds of the organization that could have been more productive if used elsewhere. Overstocking may have fewer drawbacks attached to it; however the cost of excessive overstocking may be quiet staggering in the cases when the inventory holding cost is high, as the matter may easily get out of the hands of the organization. It is commonly heard from the manager that they have about 10 years of supply of certain items. However the major concerns related to inventory management are the level of customers availing the service of the organization and cost associated with carrying and ordering inventories (Dooley, 2013).The overall objective of these three supply chain operations i. inventory management, capacity planning and scheduling is to achieve customer satisfaction, while keeping the inventory handling cost within the bounds of organization. The decision makers are always trying to achieve balance in the stocking; however they need to make significant decisions based on the size and timing of the order i. how much should they order and when is it appropriate to
