Several scholars, which have dealt with the concept of lean management, have stressed that when implementing this method, SMEs should not start with massive financial investment in lean practices but should go slow. One of the proposed framework by Herron and Braiden (2007) pointed out that, SMEs should focus on five basic practices as the stepping stone towards developing lean manufacturing in a company that include quality circle, employee involvement, 5s, set up reduction and standardisation. This argument point out to the fact that SMEs have the opportunity to implement lean manufacturing provided they follow the correct procedure.As a student of Supply Chain and Logistic Management, the study of lean implementation can help me understand and develop the methods to improve the weak supply chain function problem such as poor raw material management, inadequate production process and poor time management of delivery of finished goods etc. As already discussed above, the Chinese market, particularly the SME sector is facing the problem of weak supply chain function while implementing the lean manufacturing process, so the research area under study can help me in developing the cognizant regarding the supply chain function and core areas to focus on to implement lean production process.Over 35 years have passed since China began its economic reforms in 1978. Ever since then, the country has experienced tremendous economic growth that has made it an economic superpower, especially in the manufacturing industry (Naughton, 1996, pp-3). However, together with the many benefits and opportunities brought by China’s three-decade-plus economic boom, there have been some threats that have come along with the rapid economic growth (Howe, et al. The reform introduced the concept of a free market to foreign technologies that brought several advantages to the country but in the last decade, it also has the continuous development of national companies. This situation has led to many domestic companies losing critical market share and production lines to foreign companies in developed countries (Morrison, 2014).Moreover, with such circumstances, the manufacturing industries in China decided to change their approach in the operations of these local companies by adopting an active role of a ‘learning by doing’ philosophy rather than a
