No longer will astronauts be forced to rely only on what they can carry, but the objective is to have a system of logistics in place where needs are not only anticipated, but provided for in advance in order to keep the work going. This is a critical concept in terms of interplanetary travel due to the reality that lost or misplaced items can literally take months to replace, costing the crew valuable time to conduct experiments and get needed data back to the earth (Zinn and Goldsby 2014). In addition, if items are either used too quickly, or they are mismanaged, potentially dangerous situations can arise due to a shortage of critical items, such as food and beverages, that the crew depends on for survival. To account for this growing need, particularly as space exploration and colonisation grows closer to becoming a reality, NASA and associated partners are developing a new system of radio frequency that can account for the quantity and location of supplies in real time, not only to monitor where items have gone during space travel, but also to determine what future supply missions to the moon and beyond must focus on bringing to stations in remote areas in order to account for a variety of logistical needs.In order to begin to plan for the important missions to come, the Interplanetary Supply Chain Management and Logistics Architectures Project has been developed as a primary planning tool to be used in space exploration. The scope of this initiative is currently to designed an integrated logistics operation that can effectively guide the further development on the entire interplanetary supply chain in such a way that will result in the feasibility of sustainable space exploration in the future. This will primarily consist of earth to the moon and mars missions in the near future, including the existing space stations, but hopefully morphing into even more enhanced space exploration missions in the distant future. The main way that this will occur will be via an enhanced system of accounting for logistical operations that is specifically designed for space, the likes of which is referred to as SpaceNet (Wilson 2007).SpaceNet is begin designed as a network of nodes that can ensure the timely delivery of resources and supplies to the moon, generally getting these items to where they are needed before they even become necessary.
