Based on the study made by Sanders and Reinisch, the problem was in determining what activities and if oral sex were considered by people as “had sex”. The study was conducted in 1991. A 102-item survey was given to 599 randomly selected undergraduates. The research adhered to ethical protocol. (Sanders, S. & Reinisch, J., 1999)Adultery, statutory rape, coitus, copulation, technical virginity are important terms to the study because the sexual act is at the core of these circumstances. However, the individual needs to regard the act as “had sex”. There were more Republicans in the survey. I believe the author pointed out this difference because the results of the survey would be affected by the traditional Republicans’ response.One important point made in the article is that some people do not consider oral sex and penile-anal sex as “had sex”. This is disturbing because should these individuals be victims of these activities, they would not consider it as sexual and consequently not report the offender to authorities. Another notable aspect is individuals actually have different perceptions of what “had sex” is. Thus, the sexual practices of society may be difficult to monitor and problems that arise difficult to identify and solve.
