The major reason most of the people oppose the disposal of waste by landfills, is that they are uncomfortable with the gases associated with the landfills such as carbon dioxide and methane that causes discomfort to the residents living around the landfills. Even though some of these gases may be recycled back and channelled back to the factories, there is still a percentage that will get to the environment, and this has caused a major uproar. This refers to the factors that should be considered in excavating and construction of the landfills in order to avoid instances of posing the residents who live around the landfills and conserve the Edinburgh environment. Since a landfill involves the digging of a hole, then necessary measures like covering it up with clay and synthetic liners to avoid contamination of the underground water through seeping that can because pollution. Such synthetic liners must be impermeable to prevent poisonous liquids as the Leachates, which consist of suspended and dissolved materials from seeping into the ground. This is a rule enacted within the EU except for the cases of inert wastes. From trying to save the environment from pollution caused by the greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide, channelling back these gases has brought about the renewable energy in Edinburgh. Decomposition of this waste creates this gases that are burned to generate electricity. For instance, methane, the simplest alkane has been of great importance in Scotland where this has been used to being the source of almost the entire electricity. A research conducted shows that 5801 megawatts were generated using the recyclable solid waste which has been a great boost to Scotland. Burning of carbon dioxide also produces energy but with a relatively lesser percentage as compared to methane that produces 21 times greater than the latter. Here the major advantage is the issue of generation of electricity through the recycling these greenhouse gases. This is because this method is by no doubt clean, renewable energy devoid of any pollution to the environment. Another advantage is that old and unused excavated holes and pits are put into use that thus prevents creation of mosquito breeding grounds when filled with water. It is also relatively cheaper method compared to the amount of energy generated later on.Unlike landfill method of disposal of solid waste, incineration method is done through combustion of solid wastes
