In this publication, he set out to explain important discoveries he had made. Some of the significant concepts covered in this publication include: “consolidation theory, settlement calculations, bearing capacity theory, lateral earth pressures and retaining walls, shear strength and slope stability” (EJGE 1).The classical theory of one-dimensional consolidation was developed by Karl von Terzaghi. He came up with this theory after undertaking studies on effective stress principle. The theory was derived after making ideal assumptions. He developed this theory in 1925. This theory states that:A decrease of water content of a saturated soil without replacement of the water by air is called a process of consolidation – Saturated clay soils of low permeability, when subjected to a comprehensive stress or surcharge, immediately experiences an increase in the pore water pressure. It is the time lag between the application of the load and the dissipation of excess pore water pressure which leads to settlement, which takes place over a long period of time. (Faculty of Civil Engineering 1)The soil is homogenous and full saturated; The compressible of both soil particles and water is negligible; The problem is one-dimensional with respect to both soil strains and the movement of water; Darcy’s law applies, with a constant coefficient of permeability within any load increment;The relationship between void ratio and effective stress is linear within any load increment, and independent of time; the total stress is constant and layer thickness does not change appreciably during a load increment. (Faculty of Civil Engineering 1)The classical theory of one-dimensional consolidation has been very significant in modern applications of geotechnical engineering. Although it has been modified to be more practical, the contribution of Karl von Terzaghi cannot be overlooked.The significance of the theories that Karl von Terzaghi developed is that they have formed the foundation upon which concepts of modern geotechnical engineering is based. The classical theory of one-dimensional consolidation, for instance, is very significant in modern geotechnical engineering applications.
