Such a trait or genetic characteristic for example may be the trait of drought resistance or resistance to attack by insects. This step is followed by insertion of the isolated gene of interest into a selected vector and in most cases the vector used is the bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The gene insert that contains the gene of interest is inserted into the plasmid of the vector by use of an alternative in the various methods of recombinant DNA technology (Grundey & Rimkiene, 2012).The already genetically modified Agrobacterium tumefaciens are properly mixed with plant cells or parts of the plant such as the leaves or stems for purposes of plant transformation. Not all plants cells that take up the transferred DNA in this case referred to as the T-DNA but at least most of the plant cells manage to incorporate the gene of interest into their own genome (MacDonald, & Whellams, 2007). Tumifaciens then manages to inoculate the genes of interest into the transgenic plant cells which now become genetically engineered. A good example of a technique that can be used for incorporating the gene of interest into the transgenic cells is by use of a gene gun that bombards small particles coated with the gene of interest into the transgenic cells (De mirci, 2008).The step that follows is whereby the modified plant cells or the cells that took up the gene of interest are identified. There are lots of cells that indeed fail to take up the gene of interest and they must be differentiated from those cells that took up the gene of interest which are necessary for the next step. This is achieved through the use of selectable markers in which the cells are marked with genes (alongside genes possessing desired characteristics) expressing the trait or growing in the presence of herbicides or antibiotics. The cells that did not take up the gene of interest fail to grow under such conditions. Those cells that grow in media containing certain antibiotics or herbicides whose resistance genes are included into the gene insert are correctly assumed to have taken the gene of interest (Daboub et al.What then follows is that the genetically modified plant cells are cultured into whole organisms, in this case whole plants, through various tissue culture techniques. This requires placing the plant cells (that managed to form colonies in media
