However, with increase in education, urbanization and HIV/AIDS epidemics, this has changed and relationships are nowadays by choice (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 398).As part of the engagement process for marriage, courtship has recently shifted attention from organized marriage to a situation where the adult person selects a spouse for him/herself (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 398). In Malawi, for example, the increase in cases of HIV/AIDS has changed the situation since the young people do not encourage partners being imposed on them (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 398). They prefer to arrange for their future marriages in a spontaneous manner with someone they are sure of their health status.Apparently, this form of courtship and subsequent marriage follow what they call the modern process (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 399). The modern process does not heed to some of the traditional practices and customs, terming them as outdated, but has embraced religious, ethnic, and regional diversity with increase in the use of modern dating methods during courtship.Some of the modern dating methods include the use social media, such as the internet, television programs and radio stations (Fafchamps and Quisumbing 361). Most young people explore the online dating sites to meet the purported desirable spouse, get introduced to each other virtually, enter a relationship, propose for marriage, as eventually get down to marry (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 400). Under this method, the parents might be literally cut from any form of involvement during the courtship. Sometimes, even the couples to marry, might date for a considerable timeframe on social websites, such as facebook and other numerous dating sites, without the physical contact (Fafchamps and Quisumbing 366). Once agreed to marry, they would arrange for the date, organize wedding if any, and finally come together as man and wife. Notably, it is during the wedding arrangement when the parents become fully aware and get involved in the process of marriage for their sons, or daughters (Clark, Poulin and Kohler 405).Sometimes, the search for a marital partner is through the radio and television programs, where one introduces him/herself, indicate the kind of marital partner he/she would like and call for proposals.
