As such, they rarely provide the necessary integrated information perspective that deals assertively with socioeconomic growth and sustainability of smart cities.As such, the best way for smart cities to gain such information is through Big Data, oftenly a real-time cross-thematic data collection, processing, integration, as well as sharing through inter-operable services deployed in a cloud environment. Furthermore, this kind of information utilization requires appropriate software tools, technologies and services that enable the processes of collection, storage, analyzation, as well as visualization of large amounts of data provided within the city, such as from the city’s citizens, environment, and various agencies or departments operating within the city. Consequently, smart cities undertake effective utilization of the big data available by employing cloud based analysis services in order to generate information intelligence necessary for appropriate decision making for smart cities.In developing smart cities, the planners need to consider the five ‘v’ of big data as a guiding criterion on the plans and activities that manage the city. These five ‘v’ include velocity, veracity, volume, variety and value. Each of these aspects has an instrumental role in the developing of an appropriate program of managing smart cities. Velocity refers to the speed of generating new data, as well as the speed at which this new data moves around. Veracity refers to the messiness or the trustworthiness of the data used. Volume refers to the amount of data produced in a given preset frequency, such as every second, every minute, every hour, or every day depending on the smart city’s usage of the data.
