I cannot remember a time in my life when looking great and making a statement with my personal sense of style hasn’t been important. One of my earliest memories related to clothing places me at the kitchen table of a dear aunt. She had pinned a dress pattern onto a simple calico designed fabric. Placing my hands in the scissors, she guided me in cutting along the lines of the pattern until all of pieces were ready for assembly. We worked for the better part of a day. By suppertime, she emerged from the bedroom wearing our creation. Magic! I was hooked, but not just on the creative process. I loved the look and feel of the clothing we made. I can remember the first time I understood what my aunt meant by cutting on the bias and how it affected the lay of the clothing. As I grew up, my interest evolved away from wanting to know how the clothing was made to what sort of clothing would look best on me. I wasn’t as interested in looking like what was in so much as I was looking to express myself in subtle ways through my selection of clothing. Early in my teen years, I studied the fashion magazines we all have seen in the shops. But their appeal seemed to lessen each time I looked into one. I realized early on that these magazines were more interested in fantasy than reality, and that the clothing on those models would never look that way on me. I started to crave reality in connection with fashion. So I started to look at the people around me. I started to notice what people wore when they grocery shopped and what it said about them. It’s not that I admired the fashions in magazines any less, its just that I wanted some connection to fashion that was more grounded. This evolution of thought has brought me to apply to LIM College. I realize that I am not just enamored with creation, design and manufacture of clothing. I am not just interested in runway fashion and marketing. It is the reality of the fashion industry that really appeals to me. LIM College is a unique place. I feel that I am a perfect fit for LIM College because I am intrigued by the business of fashion, not just the beautiful clothes. For me, the business of fashion is the ultimate reality in the fashion industry and I am excited to become a part of it. Fashion School - Style and Clothes.
