Tempos are related to movements in such a way that if the movement is fast, the tempo is lively. A study specifically on the Symphony, stipulates that these movements are as follows: (1) the First Movement is a fairly fast movement. It was found to have a weighty content and feeling. The Sonata Form comprises a majority of the first movements. (2) The Second Movement is slow and solemn in manner. Many different forms contain this slow and solemn movement such as the sonata form, the ternary form, variations form, among others; (3) the Third Movement is “a Scherzo (or a Minuet in Classical-period symphonies)” which contain a ternary form or a sonata form; and finally (4) in the Fourth Movement different forms are used for the finale such as rondo form, variations form and even the sonata form, whichever is deemed appropriate for the occasion.Franz Joseph Haydn was known as the father of the symphony.
