The increase in expectations by the shareholders as a result of the double-digit yearly sales has also posed a great challenge to the production of drugs from natural resources. In addition to this, the loss of patent protection hampers with the marketability of the drug. For instance, the US was predicted to lose $63 billion in its annual income for pharmaceutical industries because of approximately 25% of the US drug market losing patent protection (Li & Vederas, 2009).Production of drugs from biologic products is also associated with some challenges. For instance, currently it is very difficult to discover a source of the natural product drug (Li & Vederas, 2009). Accessibility and supply of natural sources also pose a great challenge to the production of biologic products. The usability of drugs with complex structure as a result of being generated from higher plants also present a big challenge.
