Later on he became the music director of the same. Perkinson was also music director of American Theatre lab and Dance Theater of Harlem. Perkinson passed away in 2004 in New York after being diagnosed with cancer, but his musical compositions are recognized even today.Glass is one of the most eminent, avant-garde composers and pianist. Born on January 31st, 1937 in Maryland, Glass showed his interest in music since childhood. He learnt to play the flute and violin from a very young age. His father owned a record store and the records in the store consisted musical works of a large number of famous musicians and this encouraged Glass to learn more about music.He initially took lessons at the Peabody Institute, University of Chicago and Julliard School of music. During these years he won several honors for being one of the most promising composers. In 1964 after receiving the Fulbright Scholarship, Glass travelled to Paris to train under conductor Nadia Boulanger who taught him classical music. Being hired as Ravi Shankar’s assistant also helped him carve his niche. Glass experimented with what he learnt from Boulanger with the work he had been doing under Ravi Shankar.His music is much inspired by the people he met, the places he travelled to and the experience he gathered from all this. In his memoir Words Without Music, Glass describes his enriching experiences of travelling to India, working with Bethlehem Steel and driving a cab in New York. Glass himself is of the opinion and each of these experiences helped enrich his music and that is life has had a considerable impact on his art (Glass, 10).At first Glass’s works were considered minimalistic along with other musical minimalists like La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Riech (Potter, 7). Glass’s music stood apart from the other music that was produced in the early 1980’s. Glass’s work on , Einstein Satyagraha and Akhnaten was phenomenal. Glass had the tendency to carry the musical ideas from one compostion to another nad therefore several elements of Einstein can be seen in Satyagraha as well (Richardson, 12).provided scores for numerous movies such as Koyaanisquatsi (1982), Candyman (1991), The Truman Show (1998), The Illusionist (2006) and The Fantastic Four (2015) to name a few.
